Rushing
Most of the times it's better to shop up for the battle early than late. An early arriver can more easily designate the place of battle and can form into formations more freely
Retreat
Doing something while not overcommitting at times calls to blatantly disengage the enemy. Players not going for linear warfare often use undo and counterfactual operations for similar means. The upside of linear retreat compared to these methods is that any actions managed before the retreat are persistent.
