Haven

Haven is the outermost planet in the Remnant System. The settlement on Haven was to support the construction of the Remnant System Gate and its secondary industries (such as mining), but has seen a large population drop since the completion of that project. At its peak, Haven supported nearly one hundred million people (including tourists and business travelers). It is now primarily a trade planet due to its proximity to the system gate. Its current population hovers near 9 million, and most of these live in the remaining population centers: the capital city of Aterragem; Seguro; and Alma (the original site where the alien ruins were discovered) – these centers account for two-thirds of the planet's population. The remaining third is spread throughout the now run-down facilities that were constructed to support the gate's construction. This leaves large sections of these facilities deserted, and very dilapidated.

The people of Haven are a hard-bred bunch. They have been fending for themselves for their entire lives - a good number of Haven's more prominent families came in with the construction crews for the gate. Despite Haven's prominence as a port of call and trade center, its residents have maintained their frontiersman attitude. They do things their own way, and treasure their personal independence.

Haven's surface is largely rock and ice, and is broken by ancient meteorite impacts and the massive mining operation that was deployed to provide material for the gate. It has a thin atmosphere. Haven is a barren planet spider-webbed with interconnecting habitats, the majority which have been shut down due to shrinking population. Vast sections of the planet and have been thoroughly mined - so much so that these operations can be seen from space. Haven has the only remaining space elevator in the Remnant System, which now serves as a tourist attraction for those who wish to experience what travel to space was like before teleportation.

The sections of human habitation that are still being used are no longer new. Haven has not had any new construction in decades, and as a result what is still there has been replaced, repaired, and patched so many times that it is difficult to tell how old it is. Everything on this planet has broken down at least once, been repaired, repurposed, and broken down again.

"The Suburbs" is a slang term for the areas of Haven's cities that are no longer populated. At the height of the gate's construction, all the major mining sites were connected by pressurized tunnels; these tunnels were constructed so that they could also be used for housing workers and their families. As Haven's population shrank, these tunnels were abandoned and left to decay. These are mostly locked down, but the most useful ones still have power to allow for travel between cities for those too poor to afford using teleportation transit systems. Even so, these are dangerous to use as gangs of scavengers often waylay and kill travelers for their goods.

The ruins on Haven are extensive. The discovery of artifacts within these ruins led directly to the development of human teleportation technology. The ruins are mostly buried as well in vast, winding catacombs. Several of the labyrinths were constructed close to the surface, however, and some have been completely unearthed by scientists. The layout of these ruins is very Spartan; most spaces found were entirely empty of any amenities with the exception of a few support pillars that were carved out of the rock. The core ruin areas are constructed out of very intricately fabricated materials. Further from the central areas the rooms are smooth, polished rock for the floor, walls, and ceiling, and the builders varied the texture of the rock to help introduce variations from room to room. Scientists speculate that these portions of the ruins may have been unfinished.
